Scott Waites’ odds of success at the BDO World Darts Championship at Frimley Green, Surrey have been slashed following his impressive first round win last night.
The Outlane man crushed Willy van de Wiel 3-0 in the last of the first round matches and is now a 6-4 chance with William Hill to take the £100,000 prize on Sunday.
Third seed Waites, who has never progressed past the quarter-finals at Lakeside, looked in good form as he cruised to victory for the loss of just four legs.
The Pennine Housing carpenter will face Belgian Geert de Vos in the last 16 on Wednesday evening after the Belgian beat Tony Eccles 3-2.
Waites started at a blistering pace against the fast throwing Dutchman, hitting a 180 in a 13 dart opening leg. van de Wiel hit back and when he missed double three for the set, Waites hit double top.
It was 2-2 in the second set and van de Wiel started the deciding leg with a 180 but Waites was undeterred and went 2-0 up in the contest.
Waites hit another 180 at the begining of the third set and he stayed in command, eventually wrapping up success with a double four to record only the second 3-0 success of the 16 first round contests.
