THE seniors beat the juniors four matches to two in the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union’s annual pre-season contest at Woodsome Hall on Sunday.
That means they are the first winners of the President’s Challenge Trophy, donated by new Union president Phil Tatlock from Outlane.
The objective of the event was for team bosses Chris Mear and Tommy Ward to assess the form of the players, particularly those new to the Union.
Mear said: “The greens were a bit bumpy and the course was short so we had to play off the yellow tees.
“The Seniors seemed to adapt to the course condition a little better.”
Young England stars Nick Marsh and Jamie Bower went head to head. Marsh and fellow junior Josh Bailes came out on top against Bower and Clive Crawshaw.
But generally it was probably Mear, whose side finished fourth last year, who emerged the happier.
One player to catch the eye of junior team boss Ward was 14-year-old Hebden Bridge player Henry Butterworth, who plays off six, while Marsden’s Josh McAspurn, off the same handicap but a little older, also looked to be making progress.
The juniors start their programme before the seniors.
The first junior fixture is against Harrogate at Knaresborough on Sunday May 6 and Halifax-Huddersfield will play Leeds at nine hole course Longley Park seven days later.
Ward is planning a get-together with the players at Longley Park - his club - on Sunday, April 29, when club pro John Ambler will walk them round the course prior to the players having a round.
