Smithies tames the elements to post best local runner’s time

Calder Valley AC’s Steve Smithies clocked 54:40 to become the first local runner home at the Mytholmroyd Fell Race, organised by the Halifax Harriers AC.

The event is a tough test of endurance, character and fitness.

Rising 1,350ft from Mytholmroyd to Midgley Moor, it is a course which tests the finest athletes.

In quite appalling conditions on Sunday with wind and rain lashing down 99 intrepid runners set off to tackle the climb.

Notwithstanding the exceptionally wet conditions underfoot remarkable times were achieved in this seasonal fell race.

Halifax Harriers’ husband and wife team of Martin and Sally Cowton finished in 72:13 and 72:21 respectively while Sue Martin (FV45) celebrated her birthday in 106:15 with Ian Goodwin keeping her company also in 106:15

First man home from Wharfedale AC was Stephen Chew in 52:15, closely followed after a titanic struggle with Stewart Gregory from Holme Pierpont AC in 52:38.

The ladies honours went to Bingley AC`s Sue Becconsall in 63:42. The team prize was taken by Sale Harriers.
