Title on the line as leading lights clash

IT’S showdown time in the North Bridge LC League on Monday when Hi-Tech Cougars and Townies go head to head in what looks the title decider at 8.10.

Hi-Tech are unbeaten in their bid to retain the championship and hold a two-point lead over Townies, who can at best hope to draw level.

That would still leave Townies with work to do in trying to bridge a points difference deficit of 33 over the last three rounds of fixtures.

Some of the players could be in opposition for the second time in three days because Hi-Tech’s Saturday side, riding high at the top of the West Yorkshire League, were playing a Calderdale firsts side likely to contain Lee Davis, Jane Parker and Kate Ineson in Bradford today.

Hi-Tech’s powerful side are rarely extended at North Bridge, often starting slowly before sweeping the opposition aside.

They turned up a player short for the first meeting with Townies in mid-November but still won 21-17 with Jackie Fogarthy in fine form.

There is also a crucial contest near the foot of the table. Pumas are already down and Arrows, with just one win to their name, will look booked for second-bottom spot if they fail to beat the side immediately above them, Yo-yos.

Runners retained their three-point lead at the top of Division Two this week and it was almost so much better for them.

They appear to have ended Queens’ outside promotion hopes with a 23-19 win, second-placed Rockets having scrambled through 23-22 against Heath Ladies a couple of hours earlier.

Leaders Gems beat third-placed Harlequins 17-14 in Division Six to confirm that the scrap for honours is between them and Wasps, who were 24-13 winners against Barki Belles.

The unpredictable nature of games in Division Four this season was apparent again at The Ridings where leaders Old Brods 2, having seemingly got in the winning groove, were turned over 18-10 by mid-table Emeralds.

That was good news for Triangle and Tommos, who are within striking distance of Vicky Hellowell’s side and both have a game in hand.
