BRADLEY Hall’s Andy Whitworth continues his love affair with the Halifax Huddersfield and District Union Matchplay competition as he goes in search of his 11th success in the event on Sunday.
Whitworth, the area’s top golfer for may years, will take on Union regular Brad Tupman in the 36-hole final at Bradley Park.
The Junior Matchplay final will also be staged at the same venue on the same day with two Calderdale players, Brad Hardcastle of West End and Jamie Smith of Halifax GC battling it out for the prize.
Whitworth had an easy passage through the quarter-finals when scheduled opponent Ben Adamson was forced to withdraw due to work commitments.
That set up a last four clash with Tom Calvert after the Willow Valley man accounted for Adam Cryer of Woodsome Hall by one hole.
Tupman had a little more work to do and after seeing off Crow Nest Park’s Nathan Scott 3 and 1, he confirmed his place in the final by beating Fixby clubmate Tom Williams in the semi-final.
The Huddersfield man will be looking to bounce back after he was part of the Huddersfield pairing, along with Aaron Schnacke, which lost out 6 and 4 to West End’s Frank Greaves and Dave Stafford in the Union Scratch Foursomes final at Outlane last weekend.
There is a similar scenario in the Junior Matchplay event where Hardcastle will still be buoyant following his and partner Joe Stott’s success in the Junior Foursomes.
However, Smith will need no greater incentive to win on Sunday as he was part of the Halifax side, alongside Connah Judson, who were edged out 9 and 8 at Outlane.
And Willow Valley emerged victorious in the handicap competition with Nick Hartley and Stephen Henry claiming a 5 and 4 success over Woodsome Hall duo Mark Tyzzer-Smith and Andy McLaughlin.
Halifax qualified to play in the Junior Regional League final at Eaglescliffe on September 28 after beating Willow Valley 5 and 3.
