World champ helps Yorkshire win

Newly-crowned BDO world darts champion Scott Waites climbed out of his sick bed to help Yorkshire to success in the Inter-County Championship on Saturday.

Chelmsford Social Club wasn’t quite the Lakeside, and there weren’t several hundred fans present, but Waites still managed to win his contest against Steve Johnson as the visitors won 8-4 to take top spot in the Premier Division from their hosts.

The 35-year-old Pennine Housing carpenter, who has lived at Sowerby Bridge and Outlane in recent years before moving to Fixby, figured in the last and best contest of the day.

Johnson took the first leg in 15 darts with a 112 checkout but Waites won the next three legs in 14, 18 and 15 darts before Johnson took the fifth leg in 14 darts.

Waites, who was confined to barracks with ‘flu last week, clinched a 4-2 victory by checking out on 79 in just 15 darts.
