Rugby league: Honest Siddal toil without reward

Slaithwaite Saracens 12 Siddal A 0 (Premier Division)

Siddal put everything into this game, but could not a break down a very well organised Slaithwaite defence.

The visitors started well with forwards Jack Holmes, Ian Crawshaw and Danny Williams making good early breaks.

And Simon Longbottom thought he had given his side a 14th-minute lead when he threw out a lovely ball to Mark Boothroyd, but the referee blew up for a forward pass.

The deadlock was broken when former Halifax centre Stuart Dunbar drew the cover and sent winger Jake Smith over in the corner, Danny Garside adding the extras.

Siddal substitute Richard Casanove almost scored when he broke two sloppy tackles but the mud slowed him down enough for Joe Worthington to catch him just short of the line.

On the half hour, Slaithwaite hooker Damien Henchington intercepted a stray pass and charged 40 metres but he ran out of steam, Sam Ansel running back to tackle.

With five minutes of the half remaining, Andrew Fox pinned the hosts back with a sublime kick, forcing the opposition to drop out but Siddal couldn't find any way through this defence.

The second period was played at a much slower pace and Siddal's cause was hampered when Martin Clegg had to leave the field with a nasty rib injury.

The Saracens stand-off Simon Burkinshaw saw his 58th minute drop goal attempt stick in the mud, Siddal pounced on the ball and headed upfield again but they still could not break Slaithwaite's resolve.

Henchington scooted from 10 metres to end Siddal's slim hopes, Garside adding the extras to give his side the win.
