Fax re-sign Grady as Marshall builds impressive 2019 squad

Halifax have re-signed back rower Shane Grady for next season as coach Richard Marshall's squad nears completion.

Grady, whose late try against Toulouse in Fax’s must-win penultimate Championship fixture was crucial in their eventual top four finish, is one of the final members of the 2018 side to put pen to paper for 2019.

The Widnes-based player, consistently impressive since arriving from Dewsbury two years ago, is scheduled to undergo close-season knee surgery imminently, although Marshall is hopeful he will be up and running in four to six weeks.

“Shane needs a knee clean out; he wasn’t training at the back end of the season, but hopefully it will be a straightforward procedure and recovery,” said Marshall.

“There was a lot of interest in him for next year and we’ve done really well to keep hold of him as he could have gone elsewhere.

“He wanted to stay at Halifax, he’s been a really good signing for us since he came here.

“He goes about his business really well, he’s aggressive, he’s a great line runner and works really hard with Ben Johnston and Steve Tyrer down that left edge.

“He’s got a lot to his game.”

Grady emphasised his determination to build on the club’s back to back top four finishes, with a bolstered playing squad and the new top five promotion play off presenting new possibilities.

“We had a really good year last season, even though the Qualifiers didn’t go the way that we would have liked them to,” said Grady.

“We’ve got a good group of lads here and to pull through and make the top four shows the character that we’ve got.

“To stay for another year, I’m made up.

“We’re going to have work really hard during pre-season to make sure we start the new season flying.

“We can’t afford a slow start and obviously we’ll be targeting a spot in those top five play-offs.”
