Halifax have filled the void left by hooker Keal Carlile’s enforced retirement by signing Super League veteran Tommy Lee, initially on a deal for the rest of the 2020 Championship season.

The 32 year old, who played 15 seasons in the top flight with a number of clubs including Hull FC, Salford, Wakefield and Hull KR, was due to train with his new teammates for the first time on Thursday night.

Lee, who has made 266 Super League appearances - mainly at hooker although he also played half back, back row and loose forward - was rumoured to be moving to Toulouse for this season, but retired himself when the French club signed Widnes’ Lloyd White.

He has spent the winter playing rugby union for Hull and is not expected to figure in Sunday’s game at Leigh, with the home game against London at the Shay on March 22 a more likely option.

Carlile was forced to quit the game last week because of a worsening of an existing heart condition.
