Halifax RLFC announce the death of former chairman Tony Gartland

Halifax RLFC have announced the death of their former chairman Tony Gartland.

A statement on the club’s website said: “A long-time club supporter who led the consortium that took over the club in 1990.

“Under Tony’s leadership Halifax became a major force in Rugby League culminating in automatic choice for inclusion when Super League started in 1996.

“After he stepped down as Chairman, Tony continued to back and support the club and was always particularly supportive of the Past Players Association.

“Tony was appointed Non-Executive Director of the club in 2002.

“His involvement with Halifax RLFC started in the 1940s. He was involved in a number of capacities, culminating in his role as Chairman.

“Tony was also a former Chairman or Chief Executive of several major companies based in West Yorkshire.

“His self-developed wealth, leadership skills, combined with his admiration of Rugby League, brought stability and success to his boyhood club.

“Tony was Inducted to the Rugby League Roll of Honour in 2007.

“Rest In Peace Tony and thank you for all your work and investment you gave to Halifax RLFC.”
