Lee at double but Siddal edged out

Siddal have slipped to fourth in the National Conference League’s top flight after defeat in Cumbria for the second successive Saturday.

Gareth Greenwood’s side, beaten at Egremont seven days earlier, lost 18-15 to second-placed Wath Brow Hornets yesterday and were overtaken by Leigh Miners Rangers, 48-8 home winners over Wigan St Judes.

Siddal now have a home game against ninth-placed Wigan St Patrick’s next Saturday and then a trip to next-to-bottom Hunslet Warriors on October 18 as they bid to improve their position before the play-offs.

Greenwood’s brother Lee, the former Siddal coach and Halifax assistant boss, scored two tries and centre partner Chester Butler got the Halifax side’s other touchdown.

Scrum half Chris Brooke kicked a goal and a drop goal but Siddal, having led 10-6 at half time, were overhauled by Hornets.

Prop Iain Davies was best for the visitors while stand off Francis King, who scored a try and kicked three goals, was the home man of the match.

The big derby match in the Pennine League, between Brighouse Rangers and Halifax Irish, finished 18-18.

Also in the Championship Division, Illingworth got off the mark with a 28-6 win over Bentley Good Companions.
