Marshall still searching for complete display

Fax were 28-0 ahead at the break but started the second period slowly, allowing the Dons back into the game.

Late tries from Tommy Saxton and Ross Divorty added some gloss to the win, but Marshall is looking for an improvement on the second half performance.

“We took our foot of the gas in the second half,” he said.

“I thought for the first 40 minutes we were very good. The players stuck to their game plan in the first half and that paid dividends on the scoreboard.

“In the second half we let them get a foot back in the game. They scored a try and I think they stepped it up a little bit but we allowed them to.

“I don’t think the game was dead and buried but we pulled away towards the end due to our fitness levels and the way were in contact today.”

Marshall reshuffled the back line with Chris Taylor missing out and James Saltonstall slotting in at centre as well Alex Brown dropping out for Saxton, who impressed in his try scoring return.

“He (Saxton) played well and I’m pleased he took his chance,” said Marshall.

“He looked dangerous all afternoon with his footwork and offload game and certainly looked like causing their defence problems.

“I think Salty did well and he looks more composed every week as it’s never easy playing in a different position.

“When you’re playing full back you don’t have to make many tackles but he adapted well.”

An aspect of Fax’s play that Marshall was disappointed with was the goal kicking. Danny Craven and Scott Murrell shared the responsibility but neither were convincing in the absence of Steve Tyrer.

“No disrespect to Doncaster but when we play the teams at the top of the table goal kicks are really important,” said Marshall.

“We’ve got some selection headaches ahead of next week (at Leigh) but Tyrer will certainly offer us a better goal kicking option if selected.”
