It means they have clinched the silverware, and a place in Evo Stik Division One North next season, with two games to spare.

Saturday’s eighth win on the trot came courtesy of goals from Tom Matthews and Leon Henry.

The pressure is now off for Brighouse’s final two matches of the season, both against Bridlington Town, tomorrow and on Saturday.

Tomorrow’s home game (3.0) is sure to be a victory party with the trophy being presented to Paul Quinn’s side.

Brighouse also need only two points from their last two games to bring up 100 for the season.

A jubilant Quinn said it was “nice to get over the line” and thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of a club which was playing in the West Riding County Amateur League not too long ago.

Retford were in no mood to meekly roll over and Brighouse had a fright when Jake Stannard’s long-range lob was just a shade too strong.

However, Tom Matthews delighted the majority of the 331-strong crowd by giving Town the lead with his 41st goal of the season.

Retford ‘keeper James Hitchcock hesitated fatally as a long ball came towards him and Matthews nipped in and scored with Hitchcock stranded.

‘Keeper Jacob Giles maintained Brighouse’s lead by keeping out Rob Sanderson’s effort but the home side had the upper hand in the second half.

Captain Henry got the crucial second after 60 minutes, collecting the outstanding Matthews’ defence-splitting pass and rounding Hitchcock to score.

Brighouse might have had a third, Jason’s Price’s effort being headed off the line, but Quinn’s men had done more than enough.
