The 34-year-old half back made over 200 first team appearances for the club, scoring a total of 244 points including 39 tries.

Murrell joined the club from Hull Kingston Rovers ahead of the 2013 season, also taking the reigns as player coach during Karl Harrison’s departure in 2014 before continuing as an assistant.

He was a prominent feature of the sides built by Harrison’s successor Richard Marshall, helping the fax to three top four finishes in four years.

Under current coach Simon Grix, Scott helped the club to their first Challenge Cup Semi Final in 31 years, narrowly missing out on a Wembley appearance to Super League Champions St Helens.

Murrell had a testimonial year during 2017 and took charge of the club’s academy system.

Fax head coach Simon Grix told the club’s website: “I’d just like to say a big thank you to Muzz for his help over the last 12 months through some challenging times and I wish him all the best as does everyone at the club. Muzza has an opportunity not only for a change but to begin a career outside of the game, after all he has a long time left to work yet. He will certainly be missed and will be welcome back anytime.”

Football Director Ian Croad told the club’s website: “What can I say about Scott? He is much more than just a player, a leader on the field and a class bloke off it! I wish him the best of luck and hope to see him and Claire and the kids at the Shay when he’s not playing.”

Fax have also confirmed that Tom Gilmore will join Ottawa Aces ahead of their inaugural season in 2021.
