Robinson at the double as Fax get back on track in the Championship

Winger Shaun Robinson scored two and made one as Simon Grix’s side bounced back from back to back losses, despite the absence of injured half back Tom Gilmore and the now-retired hooker Keal Carlile.

They led 18-0 at the break and then sealed victory in the second half two classic backline tries, finished by James Woodburn-Hall and Scott Grix.

Fax started the game in now-traditional fashion, conceding a penalty in the opening set.

But unlike in previous weeks, they weathered that storm and worked their way into the game with real method.

Grix almost scored after James Saltonstall prised the defence open, and the home side were in front on the quarter hour when Grix kicked the ball in behind the defence and Robinson won the race to the ball.

Steve Tyrer converted from the sideline for a 6-0 lead and although York went close through hooker William Jubb, the home side doubled their lead with a carbon-copy play, this time Brandon Moore providing the kick for Robinson.

Tyrer was on target for a second time as the lead doubled to 12-0 and on the half hour it was 18-0, Tyrer charging at a packed defence and somehow finding a way to ground the ball.

The centre converted for an 18-0 scoreline and that was how it stayed until the break, although it took a brilliant tackle from Saltonstall to deny Lewis Carr and keep the Knights scoreless.

Fax almost extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half, Grix showing all his skills to put Woodburn-Hall over, only for referee Jack Smith to rule obstruction.

Scott Murrell almost scored from his own bomb, but the score remained at 18-0 as the clock ticked past the 60 minute mark.

York finally cracked on 61 minutes, Tyrer putting Robinson away down the left and the winger coolly slipping Woodburn-Hall over for his side’s fourth try.

Tyrer’s conversion drifted wide, but at 22-0 the game was Fax’s to lose.

They never really looked like letting their grip slip and when the outstanding Saltonstall put Jodie Broughton flying down the right, Grix backed up inside for the scoring pass.

Tyrer converted and at 28-0 that was that, aside from a late, unconverted try from Jimmy Keinhorst.
