Tyrer equals Schuster's mark as Fax crush Whitehaven

Tyrer ran in four tries - including a first half hat trick - and kicked eight goals for a personal tally of 32 points, matching the mark set by the former All Black and Newcastle Knights threequarter in a Division One romp at Doncaster in 1994.

Tyrer’s excellence reflected his teammates’ dominance, Richard Marshall’s side picking up where they left off in last season’s Super 8s.

With new half back signing Gareth Moore calling the shots alongside captain Scott Murrell and Dane Manning outstanding in the back row, the home side were in control from the start.

Halifax took the lead on 12 minutes, Tyrer running a great line to change the direction of the attack and cutting inside to score near the posts.

The centre converted and he was over again on quarter time, profiting from super build up play from Manning and winger Will Sharp.

The home side became more and more dominant as the half wore on, Moore starting a finishing a midfield raid - which again featured Manning - to score a third on the half hour and Tyrer converting for an 18-0 lead.

And Halifax struck again on the stroke of half time, Tyrer exchanging passes with hooker Ryan Maneely before completing his hat trick and booting his team 24-0 ahead.

The second half was almost entirely one way traffic, with Sam Smeaton touching down before Tyrer bagged his fourth from a Maneely break.

Ben Kaye bustled over to take the score out to 40-0, before Sharp soared to claim a well judged chip from Moore.

With Tyrer on 30 points but unaware of Schuster’s mark, Halifax waved away a kickable penalty, despite some frantic hand signals from the bench.

But when Smeaton put James Saltonstall over in the corner two plays later, Tyrer stepped up and landed the crucial conversion from the sideline.
