Bob: ‘Haven stronger

HOOKER Bob Beswick has warned Halifax they only need to look at the course of their own 2010 season to see the potential danger that Championship One outfit Whitehaven pose in tomorrow’s Northern Rail Cup qualifier in Cumbria.

Fax lifted the Championship trophy in September to crown a rollercoaster season that saw them thrown out of the Challenge Cup, taken to a Rugby Football League tribunal by star signing Stanley Gene and suffer a succession of rumoured cash-flow problems.

And Beswick, who will leave the number nine duties in the hands of Sean Penkywicz tomorrow after breaking his nose in the 50-10 win over Oldham, sees a clear correlation with ‘Haven’s own financial collapse that saw them drop into the third tier of the professional game.

“If anything, I think they will be stronger than last year, no matter what league they are in at the moment,” said Beswick.

“You only have to look at what we went through as a club last year to see that.

“We dealt with a lot of adversity over the course of the season, it brought us closer together and we went on to win the Grand Final.

“That’s what it tends to do with rugby players and they’re a pretty tough bunch up there in Cumbria anyway.

“The conditions will probably suit them more than us tomorrow and the lads just need to be ready to work hard and stick to the things that worked so well for us in the second half against Oldham.

“That was a good solid win, which I thought we needed after the Swinton game the week before.

“We completed our sets pretty well and got stuck into them in defence, I enjoyed it.

“I am made up to be back playing, even though I’ve ended up getting another day off tomorrow.”

Beswick’s relief at returning to the field stemmed from a disrupted winter that included a month’s lay-off after elbow surgery and lengthy pay talks that eventually saw him accept an amended contract for this year.

“You get stuff every year and you just have to deal with it,” he said.

“It’s your job to deal with it, isn’t it, and I’m glad it’s all sorted out now.

“I am fit and just really looking forward to the year.”
