Breaking news: Fax, Wakefield deny James is a done deal

HALIFAX and Wakefield have dead-batted speculation they have agreed a deal that would take the Wildcats’ former Bradford prop Matt James to the Shay.

James was heavily linked with a loan move to Fax on Saturday morning - the same day that boss Karl Harrison told Courier Sport he was still actively looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the start of the Northern Rail Cup in February.

But neither club would confirm they had reached an agreement over James, or even that he was under discussion.

Wildcats chief executive James Elston said only that Wakefield were “in talks with Halifax regarding players on loan or dual-registration following pre-season”.

And Fax director Ian Croad confirmed: “We have held discussions with Wakefield about various players, but as yet nothing has been finalised.

“If those talks reach a positive conclusion, we will make a statement in the usual way.

“We have a good working relationship with James Elston and the Wakefield club and we thank them for their co-operation in this matter.”

James, who had a successful loan spell with Fax at the beginning of 2009 before being recalled to Odsal, was rated as one of the best props in the Co-operative Championship last season after starring for troubled Barrow.

That form earned him a move to Belle Vue as part of new coach Richard Agar’s rebuilt side.
