Halifax utility player Callum Casey has penned a new one year deal with the club, becoming the 12th player to commit himself to the club for 2014 or beyond.
Casey, the son of the former GB prop Leo and an Ireland international, is in his second season at the Shay after leaving Super League outfit Leeds.
The versatile 21 year old had been the only ever-present in Karl Harrison’s 2013 side until last weekend’s 35-16 win at Dewsbury, when he was omitted at the last moment in favour of hooker Karl Ashall.
“Callum’s been great this year; for the coaches, he’s consistently in our thought process when we’re picking a side,” said Harrison.
“I cannot emphasise enough how unlucky he was not to play at the weekend.
“It was the right call for the team, but I know how disappointed he was to lose that record of having played in every game.
“He can play just about anywhere in the side and he never lets anyone down.
“His preparation is first class; he comes from a rugby league orientated family with his father and his brothers and that means he is always thinking about how he can improve.
“There’s a lot more to come from Callum, I’m sure of that.”
While Harrison’s squad for next year is taking shape rapidly, he emphasised there were still decisions to be made over the futures of some members of his current squad.
Out of the current crop of half backs and hookers, only captain Scott Murrell is currently tied to the club beyond this year, while Press reports on Monday linked Fax with the Batley half back or hooker Paul Mennell.
“We are probably aiming for 24 or 25 players,” said Harrison.
“There’s plenty of games left to play this year and everyone has the chance to play themselves in or play themselves out.
“The players have been told that, now it’s up to them.”
Casey and his teammates will have another unscheduled weekend off in July after Leigh beat Batley to make the final of the Northern Rail Cup, which will be held at the Shay on Saturday, July 20.
Fax had been due at Leigh Sports Village on the Sunday for a league fixture, which will now be postponed.
Contracted players for 2014: Fieldhouse, Worrincy, Heaton, Tyrer, Ambler, Tonks, Murrell, Manning, Divorty, Casey, Barlow, Bracek.
