Halifax director Ian Croad has labelled the Shay side’s Club of the Year prize as a reward for its off-field progress in 2013.

Croad, who is also acting chief executive alongside fellow board member Tony Abbott, picked up the prize at the Championship awards bash at Elland Road.

The judges praised Fax’s ‘Big Apple’ promotion, which saw a prize draw for a trip to New York draw a bumper gate to this summer’s home fixture against Whitehaven.

But Fax were snubbed when it came to dishing out the playing awards, failing to land a nomination in any category and being left without a representative in the competition’s ‘dream team’.

“In the end, we weren’t quite where we wanted to be on the field, and we’re working hard to address that for next season,” said Croad.

“But off the field, we made progress and the Big Apple day was a success story for us.

“With the Championship in its current format, with no promotion, you are always battling against the nature of the competition when it comes to building attendances, but we were up 50 per cent that day.

“The Club of the Year is our reward for that.”
