Paterson excited by Storm chance

Halifax threequarter Lee Paterson has labelled the Championship club’s upcoming training session with Australian giants Melbourne Storm as a “fantastic opportunity”.

Paterson is the only on-field survivor from the Fax side that played a full-blooded warm up fixture against the Storm in 2008, although current assistant coach Lee Greenwood also featured that night.

The two teams will lock horns again on February 19, three days before the Storm’s World Club Challenge date with Leeds, in an hour-long, behind-closed-doors opposed training session.

And Paterson admitted Karl Harrison’s Northern Rail Cup winners were already looking forward to testing themselves against the likes of Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and former Fax junior Gareth Widdop.

“We’re excited to play against players like that, even in a semi-contact game,” said Paterson.

“You are always going to pick little bits of knowledge up from being on the field with players of the standard they have got.

“Playing against them last time was fantastic and I’m sure this will be almost as good.

“It makes you raise your own standards because there is no way you want to embarrass yourself in that kind of company.

“From what I’ve been told, we are all eating together afterwards as well, which should give us the chance to pick up a few ideas too.

“I can’t wait.”
