HOOKER Bob Beswick and Super League transfer target Rob Worrincy will both start tonight’s Northern Rail Cup opener against Swinton at the Willows (8.0).
Beswick, the former Widnes and Wigan player, has not featured at all in pre-season after undergoing close-season elbow surgery.
And Worrincy is at the centre of a Rugby Football League investigation amid claims he has been tapped up, ironically by Salford, who are hosting tonight’s encounter.
“Rob came to RAF Cranwell with us last weekend and showed a good attitude and he’ll be playing tonight,” said coach Matt Calland, who is likely to keep Lee Paterson in the centres to accomodate Worrincy and in-form flyer Paul White.
“As far as anything else is concerned, the situation with him is simple: he’s got a contract with us for this year.
“Having Bob available is a big boost to us, not just for the qualities he brings to the side but because he makes Sean Penkywicz so much more effective too.”
Dual-registered Huddersfield forward Jacob Fairbank is also included in Calland’s initial 18 man squad, alongside two more young back row contenders in Josh Barlow and Joe Chandler.
Ben Black makes an expected return at half back, with Sam Barlow tipped to move up to prop to cover for the absence of three injured front rowers in Makali Aizue, Neil Cherryholme and Michael Ostick.
There are no places for player-coach David Larder, young stand off Anthony Bowman, or last-minute recruits Mike Ratu and Dylan Nash.
“It’s a strong side for what is going to be a very tough game,” said Calland.
“We didn’t really do ourselves justice in the Northern Rail last year and we want to put that right.”
