Watene cleared of foul play

HALIFAX prop Frank Watene will be available for selection for Sunday’s game against York after being cleared of a contrary conduct charge by the RFL’s disciplinary committee.

The Kiwi front rower was red carded by referee Jamie Leahy shortly before half time in Fax’s league fixture at Barrow 10 days ago after pushing Raiders full back Gary Broadbent into a concrete perimeter fence as the duo contested a Sean Penkywicz kick through.

Watene was subsequently charged with a Grade C offence, which could have seen him sidelined for up to three weeks if he had been found guilty at Red Hall.

“Our view was that Frank only did what any rugby league player would have done, which was complete the tackle on Gary Broadbent,” said Fax chairman Michael Steele, who represented the front rower at last night’s hearing.

“If there was a problem, it was with the geography of the ground rather than anything the player did.

“The committee were very fair and accepted that.”
