Setback for Brods at Hessle

Old Brodleians crashed out of the Yorkshire Shield when they were beaten 34-7 at Hullensians on Saturday.

After some good performances recently, they were out-played in most departments at Hessle and will need to regroup for Saturday’s league trip to Keighley.

In excellent conditions, Yorkshire One rivals Hullensians took advantage of a favourable breeze and showed their intent from the opening minutes.

Brods were penalised for an tip tackle and Jasper Ayrton had to leave the field for 10 minutes.

Brods were slop to react to a quickly taken tap penalty close to their line and the home hooker scored in the corner and the goal was added.

Hullensians were dominating possession and territory and on 12 minutes they scored their second try when good handling resulted in their number seven scoring wide on the right.

It was one way traffic when the same player picked up from the base of the scrum and showed power and pace to score. The stand off’s kick made it 19-0.

Brods eventually got into the game and were unfortunate not to score when the referee adjudged the ball to be held up over the line.

The visitors continued to press and were rewarded when prop Bennie Pritchett powered over on the left and Tom Wilson converted from the touchline. That made it 22-7 at half time.

In the second half Brods enjoyed more possession but the home team continued to dominate with two more tries and one conversion.

Brods seconds were disappointed that their home fixture against Wharfedale was cancelled late on Thursday leaving them without a game.

That left the Beavers to take centre stage at Woodhead and they had a convincing 39-19 win over Aireborough seconds.

In spite of tries from Nick Womersley and Michael Briggs they trailed 17-19 at half time.

However, tries from Zac Thompson, Jonny Cole Danny Hern and Bradley Martin secured victory.

Brods Colts were 22-13 winners away to Doncaster in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup yesterday with two tries from Josh Stringer and a clincher from Kieron Smith.
