Success for Tod and Nest in Alliance

Home club players provided some success when Todmorden Golf Club hosted its first Halifax, Huddersfield and District Alliance event for five years on Tuesday.

Dave Stafford (3 handicap)and Warren Duckworth (13) won the am-am section with 37 stableford points in tough conditions.

They edged out two pairs on 36 points - West End’s James Dix (3) and Graham Brazier (12) and Bradley Park’s Donald Harrison (14) and Andy Bemrose (14).

However, the Ron Parkinson Trophy for the best score went to Crow Nest Park’s pro-am pair Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (8).

They have enjoyed plenty of Alliance success and Evans shot 61 in the last Alliance at Rive Rocks, but the format meant it could not stand as a course record.

Their 39 point score was one better than Meltham’s James Fish and Tom Hunt (2).

Todmorden President Steve Packer presented the trophy.

As usual at nine hole courses, the field was split into morning and afternoon sections. The average score in the morning’s wind and rain was 28. That improved to 33 in the afternoon.

Elland’s Stan Gledhill had a fright on the first green. As he prepared to putt, another ball plugged within a foot of his. It had been struck from the first tee, 335 yards away, by Fixby assistant Jack Pearcey.

Although the last Alliance was held at Rive Rocks in 2011, official Trevor Williams is hoping it will not be as long again before they return.

Williams said that officials were trying to include three nine hole courses in their annual fixture list rather than two and Todmorden was a popular venue.

Williams said: “The course played well considering the conditions.
