Third gold is Hannah’s next target

Cockroft, who won 100m gold on the opening day of competition, led home a British 1-2-3 in the T34 800m. It was the first podium clean sweep in Doha.

The 23-year-old Paralympic champion beat team-mate Mel Nicholls into second with 14-year-old Kare Adenegan in third.

“Hurricane Hannah” will now be a red hot favourite to add the 400m title on Saturday.

Fellow Britons Aled Davies and Richard Whitehead also struck to take Britain’s gold tally to 10 for the championships.

Cockroft allowed Adenegan, who had inflicted a first defeat on her in seven years recently, to lead for 600 metres before sweeping past to win in 2min 7.10sec.

Cockroft had expressed concerns in the build up to the race about tackling the longer distance.

Afterwards she was making a plea to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to keep faith with the event after only five athletes took part in Doha.

“I believe we can fill heats and fill finals when it comes to Rio so please don’t take our event away,” she told BBC Sport.

“The IPC are doing a great job and our class is growing compared to when I started in 2011, so give us time and we will be there and will do well.”

Looking ahead to Saturday she said was determined to add a third gold. “I know I’m the strongest here and I believe I can do it,” she said.
