A noble tale of doomed love

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, the opera contains some of Puccini’s most inspired, sublime and beautiful music. From its theme of noble self-sacrifice springs melodies that grip the heart and stay long in the memory.

The touching story of innocent love crushed by two different cultures resonates as strongly as ever with today’s audiences.

The highly-acclaimed Russian State Opera returns to the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, on Saturday, February 6, at 7.30pm to present ‘Madam Butterfly’.

Featuring an impressive cast who will be accompanied by a large live orchestra of more than 30 musicians, the opera will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Producer Alexej Ignatow, of Amande Concerts who have co-ordinated the current UK tour, said: “We are constantly on the look-out for new challenges to ensure that our opera and ballet audiences get a chance to experience a wide spectrum of classic pieces.

“No experience is needed to enjoy these classics. Our sets and costume design, as well as the informative programmes, make the productions very accessible and, most of all, enjoyable.”

The shows were described by The Stage as “a boon to opera in regional theatres.”
