Aleksandar's new role

OperaNorth's new music director Aleksandar Markovic will take up his new role in September in time to launch the 2016/17 season by conducting Strauss' comic opera '˜Der Rosenkavalier'.

The 40-year-old Serbian conductor takes over from Richard Farnes who held the post for 12 years.

Based in Vienna for much of his career to date, Markovic was music director and principal conductor at the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra from 2009 to 2015. Recently he conducted Janacek’s ‘Jenufa’ for Opera North and he also led the Orchestra of Opera North in symphonic concert programmes including works by Wagner and Strauss.

He said: “Opera North is exactly where I want to be right now and I am very excited by the prospect of working with them more closely. This is a brilliant new chapter in my life.”
