Global acts for indie festival

Threadfast 2016, Bradford's celebration of independent art and music, is set to bring cult legends, world music luminaries and artists - as well as local talent - to the city.

The fifth annual festival kicks off with a lead-in event tonight when Kenyan folk artist Ogoya Nengo and the Dodo Women’s Group perform at the Delius Arts and Cultural Centre, Great Horton Road, at 7.30pm.

The festival proper opens on Friday, May 27 when Polish-born, Glasgow-based vocalist and instrumentalist Ela Orleans heads an international, all-female bill at Fuse Art Space. She will be joined by Negra Branca, Joanne Armitage and Marlo Eggplant.

Other musical highlights at this year’s festival include post-punk pioneers and John Peel favourites The Nightingales, fresh from their appearance at Stewart Lee’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival and London new wave hip-funk trio Ravioli Me Away.

Also taking part will be Chumbawamba’s Boff Whalley, 6 Music darlings Cowtown and the No Borders Ensemble.

Threadfest is organised by the University of Bradford. Festival curator Andy Abbott said: “This year Threadfest will be highlighting the inclusive and participatory nature of the not-for-profit and DIY arts and music scenes with an exciting array of events across a variety of venues. Acts from all over the world will play a diverse range of musical styles.”
