Mowbird heads up family friendly day

Mowbird, a slacker-pop quartet from Wrexham, North Wales, will headline the 13th Family Friendly Sunday music event at Arden Road Social Club, Halifax, on Sunday, February 14.

The band was formed by Ben Swain on guitar and vocals and Mike Smith on bass, later joined by Suzanne Dempsey on vocals and organ and Ben Valentine Trow on drums and vocals.

After releasing four EPs (Excellent, OK/Ilk, We Sell Maternity Swimwear/The Quiet Despair of the Starship Enterprise) the band signed to Cardiff-based Shape Records and released a debut album ‘Islander’ in 2014.

The band has collaborated with Welsh popster Sweet Baboo and has earned airtime on radio shows hosted by Huw Stephens, Tom Ravenscroft and Marc Riley.

Also on the Doghouse playlist will be Sowerby Bridge band The Tragics. The members are Jim Bottomley on guitar and vocals and Andy Greaves on guitar, vocals and mandolin.

Jim and Andy mostly play as a duo but they are occasionally joined by other musicians making a six or seven-piece band that takes in a variety of musical styles, delivered, as they describe it, ‘with cheerful savagery, memorable melodies and (preferably) not too many chords’.

Three-piece band Saints Alive were formed in 2013 and played numerous gigs in the Halifax area and beyond before disbanding with regret the following year .

However, the request for a return gig in mid-2015 caused the band to re-form. The current line-up is Tim Rothery on lead vocals and guitar, Charlie Nuttall on drums and Matthew Bean on bass and backing vocals. New member Evan Tate joined last year and, as guitarist and backing vocalist, brings depth to the band’s unique style and sound.

found multiple gigs across and beyond the Halifax area.

Opening the Family Friendly Sunday slot will be Lennie Ainsworth followed by up-and-coming singer Lucy Parker, aged 16.

She said: “I am just starting out as a singer, and with the help of my amazing vocal coach and very supportive family and friends, I am now playing gigs in the local community.

“Coming to local gigs like this is what inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn how to play, so I am extremely grateful to be playing at the place that started my musical journey.”
