Musician Barry is a man on the run

The self-taught guitar player rose to prominence as the bassist in the band Magazine and toured extensively.

He also played with Visage and The Birthday Party, and enjoyed a three-year stint with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds before establishing his career as a solo artist with the release of his seminal debut album ‘Moss Side Story’.

Critically acclaimed, the album raised Barry’s profile as a composer of diverse complexity - able to tell a story and weave dramatic pictures with his music.

Offers quickly followed and saw him work with some of the film industry’s most intriguing mavericks including Derek Jarman, David Lynch, Oliver Stone and Danny Boyle.

Having released nine studio albums, including the 1992 Mercury Music Prize nominated ‘Soul Murder’, Barry has continued to tour the world with his talents being in as much demand by new generations of artists.

Earlier this year Barry returned to the studio to begin recording his latest album ‘Know Where To Run’, which was released on March 5.

The album, recorded in Brighton with Barry’s collaborator Paul Pascoe, shows the artist embracing all his diverse influences into a more commercial undertaking.

The idea behind the album and accompanying photo book came to Barry when he began taking photos during a tour of the US and Canada with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Slowly the photos formed an idea about creating a book that moves through ‘different states’. The special edition photo book will be produced later in the year.

Barry’s music has been used for documentaries, TV series, adverts, computer games and even an Olivier Award-winning ballet performance by Sylvie Guillem and the Ballet Boyz.

It was always a logical progression for him to move behind the camera and once again his brooding film noir style and taste for dark comedy has seen him write, direct and score a number of short films.

His latest offering ‘The Swing, The Hole and The Lie’ will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Barry was born in Moss Side, Manchester, and at school immersed himself in art, music and film. His musical influences ranged from Alice Cooper to Motown and David Bowie.More recently his solo work has mostly been influenced by John Barry, Elmer Bernstein and Ennio Morricone.
