Confetti cannons, dancing eyeballs and giant pink inflatable robots were just some of the highlights of last night’s Flaming Lips show at The Piece Hall.

There was a party on stage and in the historic courtyard as thousands of fans enjoyed a joyous performance from the American psychedelic rock stars.

Giant, multi-coloured balloons were even launched into the audience.

The set included a feast of favourites, including Stars Are So Big, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, The Golden Path, She Don’t Use Jelly, The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song and Do You Realize?

And there was a two-song encore, covering Black Sabbath’s War Pigs and closing with Race For The Prize.

Frontman Wayne Coyne said: “It is amazing to be here with you tonight in this amazing like gladiators’ space.

"We as The Flaming Lips have been to almost every cool place in the entire world and we’ve never been here. Thank you for having us.”

Opening the show were co-headliners The Beta Band with their folk, psychedelia and trip-hop inspired sound, having recently reunited for new live shows.

The Fife-formed four piece opened with Memory Of A Free Festival, before a set including favourites such as Inner Meet Me, She’s The One and Squares, before closing with The House Song.

Live at The Piece Hall continues tomorrow night with Tom Jones before Tom Grennan performs on Sunday night.

There are also many more acts still to play before the end of August.
