Yorkshire countryside captured in vibrant oils

Having recently returned to the Calder Valley, artist Harriet Appleby has built a significant body of work some of which is going on exhibition at Platform One Gallery, Todmorden from today.

Whilst living and working on the South Coast, it was the open sea that provided feelings of raw open space.

Now she is back in these parts she gets the same feeling and inspiration from the rugged Pennine moorland.

A constant theme in her work has been blurred edges, materially and philosophically; a fuzziness where land and sky, sea and sky merge.

These oil sketches are made outside, using a palette knife; the ability to move the paint around on the canvas is an important part of the process, and the density and malleability of oil paints provide her preferred medium.

Harriet worked in television production for 25 years then went back to school to follow her heart: textiles and colour; studying at Manchester Metropolitan and Goldsmiths Universities.
