It is a reasonable claim to make that Billy Smart’s Circus is the most famous in Britain.
After all, most of us at some time in our lives will have witnessed the amazing feats of strength, dexterity and timing under the big top.
Now this wonderful circus, which no longer shows wild animals, arrives in Calderdale for two dates, starting in Centre Vale Park, Todmorden from May 8-11 and then Savile Park from May 13-18.
This year’s show, hosted by Yasmine Smart, grandaughter of the founder, is the largest company touring the UK.
Billy Smart founded his circus in 1946 and over the next 25 years it became a household name largely through its TV appearances. The first colour programme to be transmitted by the BBC was the Bank Holiday edition of the nation’s favourite circus with an audience 21 million.
For its 2014 tour, award-winning artistes from around the world combine in a fast-moving two hour show that has something for all the family.
These include acts from Australia, Russia, USA, Indonesia, ROmania, Italy, Argentina and France.
If you miss either local date the circus moves onto the Cattle Market Field, Holmfirth from May 19-21. Ticket details from www.billy-smarts-circus.co.uk.
