Halifax Chamber Choir’s next concert on Saturday, June 20 will mark an exciting collaboration with composer and pianist David Nelson, saxophonist Peadar Long and pianist Daniel Bath.
The ‘Night and Day’ concert at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax, will feature David Nelson’s extended song cycle ‘Songs for Orpheus’, written in 2001 but revised by Halifax Chamber Choir in a new version for choir, two pianos and wind instruments.
‘Songs for Orpheus’ is a series of six poems written by Calderdale writers Gillie Carpenter and Jade Smith and set to music by David. It is inspired by a collaboration between composer and the two poets to write about the elements – earth, air, fire and water.
David Nelson, Peadar Long and Daniel Bath are all well-known local musicians and frequent performers at Square Chapel. They will also be accompanying the choir with improvisations of three classic popular songs including Cole Porter’s ‘Night and Day’ which gives the concert its theme, and Rodgers and Hart’s ‘Blue Moon’. The choir will also perform classic sacred music by, among others, Faure and Mendelssohn.
Halifax Chamber Choir is directed by Alex Kyle. He also works with Vocalis Chamber Choir and Harrogate Choral Society’s new project, Halcyon Youth Choir.
The concert is at 7.30pm. Tel: 01422 349422.
