As it prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary in October, Overgate Hospice Choir is also looking forward to one of the most popular events in its calendar - its annual Hymn Sing.
The Hymn Sing will be held at Central Methodist Church, Brighouse, on Sunday, April 16 at 7.30pm. The guest soloist will be Rachel Mosley from Opera North and the organist will be Dr Simon Lindley. The choir will be conducted by Dr Gordon Stewart who said: “It is always enormous fun working with the choir for several weeks before the event – if there were awards for the amount of laughter during rehearsals we should surely win first prize.
“Even before the rehearsals start there is the job of choosing a wide range of hymns and songs – and, of course, the pieces the choir sing in each half. Rather than choosing a particular ‘theme’ for the evening I like to find hymns in as wide a range as I can - from German chorales to Scottish metrical psalms, at least one Redemption Song and hymns from the 1960s and 70s.”
In February the choir presented Overgate Hospice with a cheque for £8,000 which brings the total raised to £277,626 over 25 years. On May 20 the choir will present a concert called ‘A Right Royal Do’ at Halifax Minster to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
