Barrie Rutter is preparing to tackle King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s most demanding roles, at the Viaduct Theatre, Halifax, this month and then on a nationwide tour. The founder of Northern Broadsides has joined forces with opera and theatre director Jonathan Miller to bring the thought-provoking and heart-rending play to the stage. Jonathan Miller, who last directed Northern Broadsides in the critically-acclaimed ‘Rutherford and Son’, has described ‘King Lear’ as ‘the most interesting play Shakespeare ever wrote’. Also in the cast will be Catherine Kinsella as Cordelia, John Bramwell as Gloucester, Fine Time Fontayne as the Fool, Helen Sheals as Goneril and Nicola Sanderson as Regan. ‘King Lear’ will be in Halifax from February 27 to March 7 before touring until June 13.
