Youth theatre school Stage Door Studio is hoping to leave audiences asking for more with its latest production of Oliver!

Students have been hard at work rehearsing for the popular musical - and will consider themselves at home when they move into Halifax Playhouse from September 19 to 21.

One of the stars of the show will be Rocky, the Staffordshire bull terrier, who will be making his stage debut as Bullseye, alongside George Steele Whyte as Bill Sykes and Patrick Knowles as Fagin.

Many of the students take on numerous roles - workhouse children, pickpockets, dancers and character parts - to bring Lionel Bart’s vibrant show to life.

Directing are Anne Redfern and Janet Fletcher. Anne said: “Presenting Oliver! really is a great challenge and a great opportunity to learn stagecraft.”

The show includes the well-known musical numbers ‘Food Glorious Food’, ‘Where is Love?’, ‘As Long as He Needs Me’ and ‘Who Will Buy?’ and tells Charles Dickens’ story of the orphan who spends the first years of his life in a workhouse before falling in with the Artful Dodger and Fagin’s gang and being rescued by the kindly Mr Brownlow. Anne said: “It’s a great story that the whole family can enjoy.”

Stage Door Studio was formed in Halifax by Anne and Janet to create a happy, sociable and lively environment for children aged five to 17 years to gain confidence in acting, dancing and singing.

Anne said: “We are always working together on a show, charity event or concert throughout the year and striving to accomplish high standards. We are very proud of the students and the talents they have.”

Workshops are held at the Studio rooms in St James’s Street and Janet also holds a ladies Dancercise class on Mondays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
