What's on in Halifax: Year of celebrations for Halifax theatre as it reaches huge milestone

A year of celebrations gets under way with a programme of events running through this year and into 2027 to mark a Halifax theatre’s 125th anniversary.

Volunteers and Calderdale Council are lining up events to mark the milestone for the Victoria Theatre.

In addition to virtual content, the theatre will open its doors to the public for open days on Sunday, October 11, 2026 and Saturday, January 30, 2027.

And, following an exhibition now being staged at Halifax Central Library, the Friends of Victoria Theatre are following up with an exhibition at Bankfield Museum in the autumn, running from October 17 right through to February 6, 2027.

This will focus on the theatre’s more recent history, including more about the history of the annual pantomime.

The council says it is pulling back the curtain on the venue’s rich Victorian heritage and its “vibrant future.”

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for Public Services and Communities, Coun Danielle Durrans, said the Victoria Theatre is one of the premier entertainment venues in the region.

"The theatre has seen many changes, highlighted in the recent Friends exhibition at Halifax Central Library, but throughout its long history there have been many constants,” she added.

“Our enduring partnership with local groups, such as Halifax Choral Society and Halifax Amateur Operatic Society, serve as a living link to the theatre’s past, proving that while the technology and decor may change, the theatre’s role as a home for local talent is a constant.”
