John takes a whirl back on home turf

University of Huddersfield alumnus John Rigby returns to the town to conduct the Orchestra of Opera North’s New Year Viennese Whirl concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on December 30 (3pm).

The same programme will then be performed at Leeds Town Hall the following day at 3pm also.

John will lead the Orchestra in an afternoon of Viennese classics including selections from Strauss’s Die Fledermaus and Lehár’s Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow).

The celebrated annual concert in the Strauss dynasty’s home of Vienna has made their music synonymous with the New Year, and the Orchestra of Opera North’s own homage to this tradition has become an annual highlight of the company’s Kirklees Concert Season, with tickets regularly selling out. Classic FM’s John Suchet will present the programme.

Said John Rigby: “It’s amazing to be returning to Huddersfield. The town is responsible for so much of my musical education, not only because I went to the University there, but because it is so steeped in a rich musical tradition that you cannot help but be affected by it.
