Land of Nod brings comedy gold to festival

The newly-refurbished Miller’s Bar has become an exciting live music venue in Brighouse and together with ROKT climbing centre are supporting some adventurous events in the Brighouse Arts Festival programme.

Preparations are well in hand for the festival which runs from September 21 to 26 and Miller’s Bar is one of a number of venues in Brighouse which will be hosting events during the week.

The canalside venue will support the Barry Smith Acoustic Music Night on Tuesday, September 22, a free event with some of the town’s established and gifted musicians led by Barry who has been on the folk and acoustic music scene for a number of years.

On Thursday, September 24 Miller’s will be open for business with a Folk, Jazz and Soul Night. And, in a new venture, the venue’s upstairs bar will host a three-course meal with cabaret-style entertainment on September 25.

Fans of comedy will find much to entertain them on Saturday, September 26 when Leeds-based theatre company The Land of Nod present their latest show. The company specialises in surreal comedy with a satirical edge and has performed to critical acclaim in West Yorkshire and beyond - including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Land of Nod’s members are Simon Lacey, Mike Nelson and Helen Buchanan. All plays and sketches are written by Mike Nelson. The group’s broad influences include ‘Big Train’, ‘League of Gentlemen’, ‘The Mighty Boosh’ and Peter Cook.

The Land of Nod are fond of shining their comedic gaze on the absurdities of middle England, political correctness and the hypocrisies of modern life - but their main criteria is to ask , ‘Is it funny?’
