New season and a £6.6 million revamp

Exciting times at Square Chapel which will soon undergo a £6.6 million capital development, while building on its reputation as a first rate venue for arts and entertainment.

And the Spring and Summer season is no exception.

There are some lovely shows for kids like ‘Monstersaurus’ on May 22 - from the creators of ‘Aliens Love Underpants’, and is suitable for ages 3+.

Originally filmed on Square Chapel’s doorstep in West Yorkshire, ‘The Railway Children’ is a classic, and on June 4 a new adaption comes to Halifax, suitable for all the family.

‘The Adventures of Walter Lemonface’ on April 8 mixes up live animation with music and storytelling, and is an interactive show where families can control the action.

Kids and grown-ups alike will love ‘The Curious Adventures of Pinocchio’ on April 24, narrated by CBeebies star Patrick Lynch.

For more family fun this Summer, audiences can opt for ‘Storm in A Teacup’ on June 26 which takes its audience on an adventure into choppy waters with huge waves and swooping seagulls!

Other highlights in the season include the tantalising ‘Pure’, a world premiere by the acclaimed Mikron Theatre Co onMay 28, John Godber’s brand new comedy ‘Debt Collectors’ on Saturday May 21, and the Jurassic Parody “Dinosaur Park” on Thursday, May 19.

‘Being Brel’ shines the spotlight on Jacques Brel, who has sold over 25 million records worldwide and was a huge star in France and Belgium, as well as being cited as an influence by everyone from David Bowie and Marc Almond to Leonard Cohen and Alex Harvey.

And step back in time to the Swinging Sixties for ‘Shalalalalee’ on June 24, following the fortunes of Man City with a mix of archive material and classic 60s hits to get you singing. It’s a play of two halves!

Spend a memorable evening with Gervase Phinn on May 1, as he recounts tales of his life as a school inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. .

And finally there’s a wealth of musical stars with something to suit all palates! The Emily Portman Trio, are in Halifax on May 4, playing songs from their latest album Coracle. On April 7, husband and wife folk duo Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman bring songs from their new album.

Expect a rhythmic explosion on April 17, when ‘The Way of The Drum’ brings a show which has toured as far afield as Morocco, Monoco, Italy, Kuwait…and now Halifax! And grab your parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme for ‘The Sounds of Simon’ on April 23.
