Work started earlier this year and should be complete by March 2021. Local councillors, Elland Historical Society and residents have all welcomed the move. Many residents have shared their memories on social media, and can recall the building being a popular social club, with its own dance floor back in the 1940s and 50s.

The managing director of MBE, Popsie Singh said while it was exciting to provide windows and doors for some of the best know brands on the high street, nothing could beat getting work in the town where his company started.

“The library building has a fantastic history and the people of Elland have a great deal of affection for it. We know this from a post we put on Facebook.Iit got hundreds of likes and residents shared old photos. We are thrilled to be involved in this important transformation and look forward to seeing the scaffolding taken down and the modernised building being fully operational again.”

Mr Singh, who lives in Halifax, set up MBE in 1992. It is now one of the biggest manufacturers and installers of doors and glass in the country, and has a £11.5m turnover. The company employs over 70 staff at its Elland HQ and another 20 based nationwide.

As well as high street names, a lot of its work is for hospitals and schools all over the country. It also has a fabrication and maintenance arm, and makes bi-fold doors, glass staircases and windows for individuals at home.

While the pandemic initially slowed things down for MBE, Mr Singh said the company had been fortunate in that it still had orders going forward and plans were in place for this to continue.

“Business as a whole in the UK is changing but we are ready to move with the times. Our two next big projects are for hospitals in the South of England, and the residential side is looking promising as people look to improve their homes. As well as making our own products we also install them so can keep prices down. We are ready for whatever 2021 throws at us.”
