Trinity Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) is seeking to establish a new free school in the Brighouse area to provide much needed additional secondary places for 11-16 year olds.

An application was submitted to the Department for Education late last year, and has now proceeded to the next phase.

The two schools that currently serve this area are consistently over-subscribed and with new housing planned there is a concern that the Local Authority will run out of secondary school places in the short to medium term based on forecast student numbers.

With this combination of rising student numbers and the proposed increase in housing required to satisfy the Local Authority development plan, the trust believes a new school will be essential to ensure there are sufficient secondary education places into the future.

Positive discussions have taken place with Calderdale Council and the application is being supported in principle.

Trinity MAT currently has a number of secondary schools within the trust including the outstanding Trinity Academy Halifax, Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge which is in the top one per cent of most improved schools nationally, and Cathedral Academy in Wakefield, awarded TES Secondary School of the Year 2019.

St. Chad’s Primary School in Hove Edge, Brighouse and Akroydon Primary Academy in Boothtown are also part of the Trinity MAT.

CEO of Trinity Multi-Academy Trust, Michael Gosling said of the application, “As a trust we are keen to engage with people from the local community and are hoping to gain support for our bid to create additional choice for secondary education places for the area.

"Our aim is to provide a new school offering the high quality education and inspirational learning environment enjoyed by students across our MAT schools.”

The trust would be interested to hear from prospective parents of secondary age children as well as the wider community with regard to the application. A web site has been set up for further information at www.trinityacademy-brighouse.co.uk where you can share your views via email.
