Video: A and E closure march a success and there’s more to come

Organisers said the non-political event was a “huge success” and “just the start” of a series of protests against the proposed restructuring of health care provision in Calderdale and Huddersfield.

Savile Park man Gary Scott, who organised the march from Hunger Hill to Northgate House and dressed as a clown because “only a clown would propose closing Calderdale A and E”, said he was left very emotional at the turnout.

Mr Scott said: “That was fantastic. I was almost crying with the amount of people that have come out today to show what they think about the changes to the NHS in Calderdale and Huddersfield.

“I’m really overwhelmed. I’m sort of speechless. It was so many different kinds of people as well who have come together and this is just the start now.”

Mr Scott said the next protest event will be a meeting at North Bridge Leisure Centre, on March 29, from at 12.30pm. Organised by Unison there will be a panel of speakers including GPs, politicians and others.
