30 years of girl power for vital WomenCentre

Angela Everson and some volunteers from the Women Centre., Halifax celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Originally established in 1985 as Womenspace in Kirklees and the Well Woman Association in Calderdale, the services merged to become ‘WomenCentre’ in 2008.

The centre helps women during periods of crisis in their lives, including those experiencing mental health difficulties, those that have been in contact with the criminal justice system, women refugee and asylum seekers, those with drug and alcohol problems and victims of domestic violence.

Angela Everson, CEO of WomenCentre, said: “Women accessing our services routinely say that they feel safer, healtheir and more confident. Many go on to become peer mentors, volunteers or staff.”

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I was powerless, a victim of terrible human beings’ behaviour. I was hurting, I nearly did not live. Now I am not powerless, I know I have power inside. I am stronger every day, thanks to the work of WomenCentre.”

WomenCentre are now hoping to raise £30,000 to employ a community fundraiser.
