Gillian Lee Smith’s first solo exhibition ‘We all Cast Shadows’ is currently on display at the gallery and enthusiasts enjoyed a talk by the artist at a recent event.

Kate Lycett, who attended the talk, said: “I have long been a fan of Gillian’s work. It is beautiful and haunting. Hearing her talk about it, and looking through her beautiful sketch books, lead to a greater understanding of her as a story teller.”

Gillian spoke about how her recent work has been inspired by a book called ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ by Nathaniel Pholbrick, a true story which helped to create Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

Paintings were sold on the night and proprietor of the gallery, Alison Bartram said: “Gillian creates art that’s abundant in emotion and atmosphere and she has the ability to unearth a narrative within each piece that makes you want to delve deeper into the story that lies within.”

‘We all Cast Shadows’ continues until January 21 at the Heart Gallery. On October 30, Gillian will paint live in the gallery and on November 29, a book launch will be held, with songs inspired by the work.

Heart Gallery is at 4 Market St, Hebden Bridge.
