Rachel Gough who runs Inspired Marketing said her firm and others had benefitted from EU money and was concerned about not receiving further support.

She said: “Businesses will be affected because the EU invests millions in grants and leaving will change the perspective the continent has of us.

“No on can predict what will happen to Britain in the future.”

Other traders said businesses had to make the most of the situation.

Eileen Kelly from Cresswell’s Accountants said: “It has happened and we can’t change it so we have to be positive.

“Where it affects our clients we will be there to help them.”

Business consultant Richard Hitchcock said: “It’s too new to understand it. All I’ve thought about so far it the effect it will have on my children.

“My son is doing politics and languages was gutted about it. I haven’t really thought too much beyond that.

“But the concern is will the rest of Europe still welcome us with open arms?”
