Calderdale hit by strong wind and heavy rain

Wind speeds have been forecast to reach up to 27 miles per hour and in Queensbury, strong winds caused a lorry to overturn.

It is expected to remain wet and windy for the rest of the day - particularly over the Pennines.

A Highways Agency spokesperson said: “Persistent rain combined with gale force winds continue to make driving conditions hazardous.

“Things will slightly worsen to the north as the rain becomes heavier and the wind stronger at the end of the night, with gale force winds extending to low level roads .”

Light sleet showers are forecast for Calderdale on Saturday and Sunday.

Tomorrow, there will be highs of 12C and lows of 1C.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 21 miles per hour.

There are currently four yellow Met Office weather warnings in place for West Yorkshire.

A warning for rain is valid from 3pm this afternoon until 9am tomorrow (Saturday).

The Met Office said that the public should be aware of the risk of minor disruption from localised flooding.

A warning of wind is valid from 9pm this evening until 8am tomorrow - gusts are expected to reach 50 to 60mph, with some possible disruption to transport.

Warnings are also in place for snow and ice for Northern England - though showers are expected to be confined to hills in this area.

The warning is valid from 6am tomorrow morning until 12pm on Sunday.
