Calderdale students hold their own referendum

Sixth form students at Rishworth School were tasked with leading the EU referendum debate as part of their studies.

Two opposing teams were formed – Ed Buckley led Team Brexit and Olivia Byrne led Better Together.

Each cohort put together convincing arguments to back their particular stance and then held year group assemblies and led their own BBC referendum-style debates.

Librarian Mrs Ellis became the returning ffficer today for the Mock Referendum, which allowed students to vote.

She said: “Year 7 and 8 pupils were very excited at the prospect of being able to vote and we had an extremely good turnout from all year groups”.

Rishworth School decided to remain part of Europe with a 63 per cent landslide.

Polling stations close tonight at 10pm.
